Food for the Future
The food processing industry is an important industry for Thailand as it makes use of large labour forces, offers excellent returns on investments, offers high added values, and has the highest investment rate in research and development when compared with other Thai industrial production sectors.
Current global trends indicate a change in this industry in 3 sectors, which are anticipated to have wide-spread effects on this industry. These trends include a demand for higher safety standards and product traceability for consumers, a large increase in the consumer demands for healthy foods and food supplements, and the development of protein-based food products. Thailand finds itself in an advantageous position to adopt these three industrial trends in modifying existing food processing industries and promoting the following initial industries: industries related to increasing traceability standards, industries related to the production of health and fortified foods, and the production of low fat, low sugar and low energy foods.
